Martinoni earns fifth-place at state wrestling tournament
FHS wrestling facts
In California, there are more than 27,000 wrestlers from more than 900 schools. Just making it to the state tournament represents the top two percent of all the wrestlers. Finishing in the top-eight is extremely difficult in a one-division tournament. Unless you have wrestled in California before, it’s hard to comprehend just how difficult it is to finish on the podium.
Angelo Martinoni places fifth in the state and becomes Folsom High’s 16th state placer in the history of the school and the tenth state placer in the last seven years.
Martinoni finishes as a three-time state qualifier, a state medalist, a two-time Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Champ, an All-American, and becomes Folsom High’s all-time best 126-pounder, knocking off three-time state qualifier Connor Pollock, who was sixth in the state at 126 in 2012.
Kyle Richards is also a three-time state qualifier and will look to join Curtis Booth next year as the second wrestler at Folsom to qualify for state every year of high school. Richards finished in the top-12 this year and was one match away from placing as a junior.
Evan Taylor, also a junior, will be back next year with Richards, as returning state qualifiers.
Folsom finished 30th in the state, which is the top three percent of every high school in California that has wrestling. This is the seventh year in a row that Folsom has finished in the top-30 in the state.
